I believe Brian is absolutely right. I have long maintained that the successful digital agencies of the morrow will be holistic and display a seamless integration of the following: web design and development, web analytics, SEO, SEM, social media marketing and ORM (online reputation management).

As an ORM I can attest that in almost every single project I have been involved with I have had to work hand in hand with other consultants in the aforementioned fields. Having them in-house (as opposed to having to subcontrac) truly makes a difference and ensures the best chances of success for just about any project. It also means that we can offer the end client other complementary services beyond his/her initial scope and that truly makes sense.

Art the same time that entails that we ORMs must make an effort and stretch beyond PR and communications and gain an understanding of those allied fields I have just mentioned - at least to a competent intermediate standard.

Completely agree with you on this one Brian; as long as the individual's aims are aligned with that of the business - not necessary completely as this would lead to rigid thinking and stifle innovation - but such that they have a mutually beneficial relationship, digital is a growth area where people can really shine. As a result, the agencies/companies they are a part of shine as well, and the clients of those agencies/companies enjoy the benefits of having a genuinely cutting edge group of people on their side.
